This position is temporary and has a Not-to-Exceed date. However, an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.
Serves as a smokejumper, performing a variety of duties in the areas of parachute jumping and fire suppression. Upon completion of annual refresher training, is subject to work assignments throughout the Region, in any other Forest Service Region, or for other agencies concerned with managing forest or range lands.

TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).
Positions will be filled as atemporary appointment up to 6 months.
The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career- Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.
Must be a U.S.Citizen/National to apply. Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with the Selective Service. Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required. Position requires a Work Capacity Test (WCT). Must meet Smokejumper Medical Qualifications. Minimum 90 days experience as a smokejumper. Ability to obtain a Crew Boss and ICT5 NWCG qualifications. Smokejumper Work serves as an experienced smokejumper, performing parachute jumps, and a variety of wildland fire suppression duties. Makes parachute jumps from various aircraft under many conditions while executing landings on rough terrain, open areas, mountain slopes, or timber. Performs wildland fire suppression duties using a variety of hand and power tools (such as Pulaski, shovel, chain saw, and McLeod). As assigned, jumps as Initial Attack Fireboss. Determines fire strategy; makes work assignments; reviews work performance; completes fire and time reports. Participates in and successfully completes annual refresher training in parachute jumping, parachute handling, firefighting, and use of specialized tools and techniques. Travel to fire assignments may vary from parachute jumping to foot travel, truck, bus, helicopter, etc.
REQUIREMENTS:
Subject to successful completion of pre-employment medical examination.
ARDUOUS FIRE POSITIONS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be employed in a position performing hazardous duties. An initial pre-employment medical examination is required for arduous fire positions. Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will be considered disqualifying for employment.
WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.
You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.
GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-05 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Performed parachute jumps from various aircraft, with a minimum of 90 days as a smokejumper trainee. Suppressed the full range of difficult and complex wildland fire using common and proven basic techniques.
For the GS-06 there is no substitution of education for this position.
Selective Placement Factors:
A minimum 90 days experience performing wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions. This experience must be documented with specific dates and detailed duties that show your 90 days of on-the-line experience in the online application or resume for verification.
Minimum 90 days experience performing as a smokejumper.
Ability to obtain CRWB and ICT5 - National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualifications.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
